What to expect throughout your deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massages are one of our most popular treatments at Massage Land. While the name “deep tissue” might sound intimidating, the treatment can be incredibly beneficial. By using slow, deep massage strokes to reach the deepest layers of muscle, a deep tissue massage can be intense at times. However, any short-term discomfort can help release chronic pain. Hence, improve your overall quality of life by returning your body to its normal functioning.

Consultation:

Throughout your deep tissue massage, you can expect several steps. Firstly, your therapist will consult with you to discuss which areas of your body require the most attention. They will also screen you for any medical conditions that may affect the treatment. You’ll be asked to specify your preferred massage pressure, and you can change this at any time during the massage.

Muscle Preparation:

Before the deep tissue massage begins, your therapist will warm up your muscles with massage oil and apply light pressure to the areas that need attention. Then, they will use a technique called “stripping” to apply pressure along the muscle fibers using thumbs, elbows, forearms, and knuckles. This technique can cause a degree of discomfort to reach the deeper layers of muscle, tendons, and fascia to release chronic pain.

Your therapist will also use friction to apply direct pressure across the muscle, realign tissue fibers, and release knots that are the root cause of your pain. If the massage becomes too uncomfortable, you can let your therapist know. You’ll also be asked to breathe deeply when they work on particularly tense areas, and the pressure can be reduced if it becomes too much.

How to Prepare:

It’s normal to experience some mild stiffness in the days following a deep tissue massage. If the pain persists for longer than a few days, you should contact your therapist. To prepare for your deep tissue massage, you should drink plenty of water throughout the day and communicate any existing medical conditions, injury history, and current concerns with your therapist. You should also try to relax during the massage to help your therapist find and treat the areas of concern.

After your treatment, you can consider using ice on specific areas that were focused on in the treatment. This can help reduce swelling and speed up the recovery process. Additionally, it’s a good idea to book regular appointments for the long-term benefits of massage therapy in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and stress management.

Benefits:

Deep tissue massages can be beneficial for treating musculoskeletal issues such as chronic muscle pain, limited mobility, injury rehabilitation and athletic recovery, osteoarthritis, sciatica, repetitive strain injuries, tennis elbow, breaking up scar tissue, lowering blood pressure, and lower back pain. They aim to increase the body’s ability to repair itself by increasing blood flow and decreasing inflammation.
